Call for Participation: Designing Student-Centered Learning Experiences at the Olin Summer Institute

Registration is now open for the Olin Summer Institute!  Designing Student-Centered Learning Experiences is a weeklong interactive workshop for faculty teams engaged in a curricular change effort at their own institution. Through participatory workshops, immersive design exercises, and presentations from experts, teams of faculty learn about, experience, and practice effective, engaging teaching approaches for new and meaningful STEM curricula. The workshop will be held June 8-12, 2020 at the Olin College campus in Needham, Massachusetts.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Akron invites applications for two talented and dynamic tenure-track Assistant Professors who can establish and execute a vibrant agenda for strategic research and education for the next academic year (2020-2021). Candidates are expected to establish a nationally recognized and externally funded research program. The successful candidates will have a strong interest, passion, and ability to teach undergraduate courses, supervise M.S. and Ph.D. students, mentor undergraduates in research, and integrate research with teaching at the graduate level.

Members of the faculty in the department pursue a broad research program that spans interdisciplinary experimental and computational research in biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomechanics, signals, and sensors. Our faculty have active collaborations within the university, as well as with physicians and scientists at national and regional institutions, such as the Cleveland Clinic and Northeastern Ohio Medical University. Faculty research has been supported by funding from the NSF, NIH, DoD, Veterans Administration, various foundations, and industry. The University of Akron is a research-intensive public university with about 20,000 students. The College of Engineering enrolls approximately 2800 undergraduate and 300 graduate students. In addition to its traditional programs, the college faculty contribute to five multi-disciplinary research centers including Conquer Chiari Research Center and Biomimicry Research and Innovation Center. The Department of Biomedical Engineering has 330 undergraduate students, offers ABET- accredited B.S. degrees in Biomedical Engineering, and participates in M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the College. We emphasize experiential learning. A majority of the undergraduate students participate in our co-operative education programs and are also active in regional and national conferences.

Required Qualifications
Candidates should have a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline with biomedical engineering emphasis, and preferably post-doctoral training. Candidates are expected to have received their degrees, or completed all requirements and expect their degree before joining in January 2021.

Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience and a commitment to continue working with or teaching diverse groups and diverse students will be valued. Preference will be given to candidates with research interest in areas that are complementary to active research in the department, with particular interests in the broad area of biomechanics.

ASEE BED award nominations

Each year, the Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) of the ASEE grants several awards at the annual ASEE conference, including the Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award and the Biomedical Engineering Teaching Award.

Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award

The Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) of ASEE annually awards The Theo Pilkington Outstanding Educator award. This award is conferred by the division for significant contributions to biomedical engineering education as evidenced by the development of successful undergraduate or graduate level programs, curricula, publications as well as by membership and activities in ASEE/BED and other biomedical engineering organizations. The award consists of a commemorative plaque and a check for $350.  This award recognizes the contribution of Theo C. Pilkington as a true pioneer in Biomedical Engineering who contributed significantly to the advancement of Biomedical Engineering Education.

Biomedical Engineering Teaching Award

This award is conferred by the Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) to recognize contributions in the field of biomedical engineering education by new faculty members as evidenced by innovative teaching materials, curricula, textbooks and/or professional papers and by activity in ASEE/BED and/or other biomedical engineering organizations. Awardees must have a primary educational role in biomedical engineering, either through a dedicated BME/Bioengineering program or through a related engineering program. Faculty members who have no more than 5 years (by June 1 of the year in which the award is given) of teaching experience with primary course responsibility at the university/college or community college level are eligible for this award. The award consists of $350 and a commemorative plaque.

The Awards Committee is again soliciting nominations for these two awards.  Note that all award winners must attend the Awards Banquet held during the ASEE Annual Conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Greetings to all,

I hope you are all enjoying (or close to enjoying) the winter break. I wanted to announce the date for our 1st BEEC Virtual Conference to be held on January 16th from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm (EST). We have our website up with the most recent information about the conference (LINK). The meeting overview is below :

  •  Sharing teaching assignments, projects, and techniques in a lightning talk format (1 slide/3 minutes).
    • Will include brief discussions in groups.
  • Senior teaching faculty panel on career development and advice.
  • Group discussions on strategies for funding and publication in BME education research or programmatic/course design.

Description

The Bioengineering Department at the University of Pennsylvania seeks applicants for one full-time lecturer position. Responsibilities will be teaching duties in biomedical signals and systems analysis, medical devices, and engineering design instruction. In addition, the position includes some advising and administration in the department’s undergraduate program. The position will be on a 12-month basis with successive one-year re-appointments possible and a limit of four consecutive appointments, based on an annual review and the department’s needs. A Ph.D. in bioengineering, another relevant engineering or science discipline and a commitment to undergraduate education are required; previous teaching experience preferred.
