6. CALL FOR PAPERS: Abstract deadline for 2021 Frontiers in Education Conference – Extended to February 15, 2021

Abstract submission is now open for the 2021 Frontiers in Education Conference, scheduled for October 13-16 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

FIE welcomes Full Papers up to eight-pages and Work-in-Progress Papers up to four-pages that address the broad tracks of (1) innovative practice, (2) research-to-practice, and (3) research. Work-in-progress papers are typically in frontier areas where it is understood the work is in an early or intermediate stage and authors are seeking feedback from the community. Further, FIE welcomes proposals for panels, workshops, and special sessions in order to disseminate scholarly efforts in non-traditional ways.

We encourage authors to consider the FIE 2021 conference theme of “Envisioning Convergence in Engineering Education.” Convergence can be defined as integrating knowledge and techniques from multiple disciplines and from both academia and the workforce while also providing students the opportunity to develop their professional skills to competently address societal opportunities and challenges, such as those related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Specific topics of relevance include incorporating convergence into programs, curricula, and continuing education; integrating team science into convergence education; teaching convergence and responsible science via research, and using technologies to advance convergence in education and training.

The abstract submission deadline is February 15, 2021. Go to fie2021.org to find out more and link to the abstract submission site. Note: FIE 2021 is scheduled to be an in-person meeting. 10. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Queer Student Panel Recruitment through ASEE Student Division

Our names are Brandon Bakka and Madeleine Jennings. We are both queer graduate students interested in studying the queer engineering experience.

We are emailing to request panelists for our panel entitled “Student Panel: Understanding Queer Experiences in Engineering.” We are seeking participants in a graduate or undergraduate engineering program, who identify in any way with the LGBTQIA+ community, and who reside at the intersections of other marginalized identities. We recognize that queerness is not the only identity that is marginalized in engineering. We also realize that queerness intersects with other marginalized identities and that our current sociopolitical climate mandates now more than ever that we as scholars pay attention to these intersections of identity. Therefore, we would like to be intentional about elevating the voices of queer engineering students who reside at the intersections of marginalization, and particularly our queer, Black colleagues.

This panel will serve to educate faculty about the experiences and challenges that LGBTQIA+ undergraduate and graduate engineering students face both personally and professionally. This panel will be organized and executed entirely by students. This innovative approach provides a platform for a traditionally marginalized student group to share their stories and to educate allies. This panel will also serve as a pilot for a new type of training that reinforces allyship and advocacy for the queer community through participatory action and story-telling. This training is also designed to build empathetic connections through the sharing of real experiences that students have had in engineering. By grounding this panel in LGBTQIA+ student experiences and empathetic learning outcomes, we intend to educate our participants beyond just LGBTQIA+ terminology. The goal of this panel is to help participants empathize with the realities of navigating in engineering as a marginalized individual.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge that sharing our stories as queer engineers can be both therapeutic as well as difficult. This panel is intended to be impactful precisely because we anticipate it to be raw, honest, and emotional. In the event that you do not feel comfortable serving as a panelist, we are also collecting statements and stories from queer engineering students to include in our training packet that participants will receive.

If you are interested in participating in this panel, please fill out the following survey. https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0p7BamP9JVysZJX

We look forward to hearing from you!

Kind regards,

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:JEE Mentored Reviewer Program

The Journal of Engineering Education (JEE) is committed to cultivate, disseminate, and archive scholarly research in engineering education.  To expand our reviewer base and maintain the quality of manuscript reviews, JEE  launched a new Mentored Reviewer Program in January 2019. This program is intended to coach new or novice reviewers through the review process with mentor who has substantial experience in reviewing and writing engineering education research studies. We are inviting applications for mentees to the JEE Mentored Reviewer Program. Mentees for the program should be novices in engineering education research such as graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and engineering faculty.  Mentees should display evidence of developing expertise (through formal courses or real-world experiences) in research areas that align with the journal’s mission.  Mentees should have developing expertise in either quantitative or qualitative research methods. Individuals from countries other than the United States are welcome and encouraged to apply.

The Mentored Reviewer Program is a competitive program for both mentors and mentees.  All mentors and mentees will be acknowledged at the ASEE annual meeting and will receive a certificate recognizing their accomplishments through their participation in the program during the previous year.  Mentees will be asked to participate in an online training with their mentors and JEE editors that will include an introduction to JEE and an overview of expectations for reviews.  During the mentorship period (approximately 6 months), mentors and mentees will be asked to work together on approximately three article reviews.  A scaffolded approach to the review process will be provided allowing the mentee to gain more independence by the final review.  To the extent possible, mentors and mentees will be matched based on expertise. For more information on the program, please contact Lisa Benson at lbenson@clemson.edu, or visit our website: https://cecas.clemson.edu/jee/.

The application for mentees is available at: https://tinyurl.com/JEEMentoredReviewMentee.  Applications are due by December 11, 2020.

Student Division Newsletter, October 2020

Happy October, Student Division!

Halloween is just around the corner, but just as scary is that many of our semesters are now half-way through!  I know I’m not alone in feeling like time has flown by this semester.  Although it’s especially important in these trying times that we step away from the screens and devices to enjoy the (mostly) pleasant fall weather, it’s also important to take time and celebrate those in our communities who may not be getting the visibility or recognition they deserve.  October marks two awareness months designated to recognize just that: National Disability Employment Awareness Month and LGBT History Month.  In line with our division’s DEI initiatives this year, our Diversity Chair Thant Soe has put together an awesome infographic with details about National Disability Employment Awareness Month.  Our book club is also ongoing, about which you can find more information in the announcements below.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Adrianne (ajwheele@gmail.com) or Cassie (cswood@umich.edu) with any questions or concerns regarding the division or the annual conference, or to Skyler (me@skylerausten.com) with questions about adding a listing to our monthly newsletter. Until the next newsletter, stay well and take care!

Best,

1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Diversity Book Club

ASEE Student Division would like to start a book club to explore diversity issues experienced in engineering. We will cover two books in the academic year. During these club meetings, we will invite ASEE diversity researchers to be there to relate it back to engineering and engineering education research. The second book will be selected based on the members’ recommendations.

We would like to start off with Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez. Current and future engineers need to be informed about the impact of their designs when gender differences are not considered. Especially when machine learning and artificial intelligence shape our future, we should all learn about the data content that is being considered. This book exposes the gender data gap – a gap in our knowledge that is at the root of perpetual, systemic discrimination against women, which means everyone because male engineers can have mothers, wives, sisters, daughters who are also affected by this.

The book will be divided into two sections; thus, we will have two meetings during Fall:

(1) Daily Life and the Workplace (Chapters 1-6) will explore workplace discrimination, gender bias in academia, public transportation, influence of motherhood on career, brilliance bias.

(2) Design, Health, and Policies (Chapters 7-16) will explore data correlations and gender, data programming, tech companies, future technology design development, medical research methodology, diagnosing females, recognizing the cost of female gender roles, and policies for inclusivity.

If you are interested in signing up, please fill out this short survey. If you have any questions, please e-mail ms3297@drexel.edu.

5. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Frontiers in Education Conference: REDUCED STUDENT RATE AVAILABLE!

The Frontiers in Education (FIE) conference will be held October 21-24 online! This conference is a joint effort between the Educational Research and Methods (ERM) Division of ASEE and two societies from IEEE (IEEE Education Society and IEEE Computer Society). The detailed program is now available if you would like to see what types of sessions are being offered. Typically students find great value in the special sessions which are usually very interactive and unique to FIE. This year we have significantly reduced the student rate to only ~$50 USD (plus tax), and registration is still open! In the past, the student rate for FIE has been $350 which has limited students’ ability to attend. We wanted to draw your attention to this change and hope it allows additional students to be part of FIE 2020. If you have any questions, please email fie2020@akademikonferens.se, and we hope to “see” you there!

  1. PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT: University of Michigan Ph.D. and M.S. Programs Engineering Education Research PROSPECTIVE STUDENT OPEN HOUSE

We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM’s graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM’s EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model: several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments, while EER graduate students are part of a college-wide program. This allows the EER faculty and their research to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. An EER graduate degree will provide students with career opportunities in academia, nonprofit organizations, and industry. More information about the program is available at our EER website (https://eer.engin.umich.edu/).

We will be hosting a Virtual EER Prospective Student Open House on Thursday and Friday, 10/08/20 and 10/09/20 via Zoom (zoom link will be e-mailed prior to the meeting). Students from all institutions are invited to attend. Participants will hear about the program, meet faculty and graduate students, tour (virtually) the beautiful University of Michigan campus, and learn about career opportunities as a UM graduate in this field. Note that applicants to the EER graduate program must have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in a traditional engineering discipline.

Please register to attend at this open house registration site (https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6o3uvit5UsOu52R), and please forward this link to any friends who may be interested. E-mail us for more information at eerprogram@umich.edu.

Can’t make it to the open house but are interested in applying? Visit the EER website (https://eer.engin.umich.edu/) to learn more about the graduate program. We hope you will consider UM as you decide to pursue your graduate studies in engineering education.
