Happy September, Student Division!

 

The semester is back in full swing for many, so we wanted to reach out and let you know about what the division has been up to, as well as some job postings and general ASEE Student Division announcements. Besides these opportunities, we also wanted to share some of the initiatives in the works to promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity as a division. You can find more details on the first of these, a diversity book club, in the general announcements below. We’ll also be adding information about DEI in each of the coming newsletters. September is National Hispanic Heritage Month. We celebrate by remembering Dr. Ellen Ochoa, first Hispanic female astronaut. Check out the flyer below for more facts and figures. Huge shout out to our diversity chair Thant Soe for putting this together!

  1. STUDENT DIV ANNOUNCEMENT: Request for Feedback on ASEE Hub

 

You may have received an e-mail from ASEE about a new Hub forum that is intended to promote communication among members. The Student Division has a group site within this Hub, and we’re hoping to learn how we can best use this new platform to serve our members. Please provide feedback on the ASEE HUB as to how you would like to see the division use the forum. To access the Hub, please go to https://aseehub.asee.org and look for the Student Division category. Feel free to use this discussion board to give feedback or start other discussions.   1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Diversity Book Club

 

ASEE Student Division would like to start a book club to explore diversity issues experienced in engineering. We will cover two books in the academic year. During these club meetings, we will invite ASEE diversity researchers to be there to relate it back to engineering and engineering education research. The second book will be selected based on the members’ recommendations.

 

We would like to start off with Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez. Current and future engineers need to be informed about the impact of their designs when gender differences are not considered. Especially when machine learning and artificial intelligence shape our future, we should all learn about the data content that is being considered. This book exposes the gender data gap – a gap in our knowledge that is at the root of perpetual, systemic discrimination against women, which means everyone because male engineers can have mothers, wives, sisters, daughters who are also affected by this.

 

The book will be divided into two sections; thus, we will have two meetings during Fall:

(1) Daily Life and the Workplace (Chapters 1-6) will explore workplace discrimination, gender bias in academia, public transportation, influence of motherhood on career, brilliance bias.

 

(2) Design, Health, and Policies (Chapters 7-16) will explore data correlations and gender, data programming, tech companies, future technology design development, medical research methodology, diagnosing females, recognizing the cost of female gender roles, and policies for inclusivity.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: ASEE Survey – Natural Vocabulary on ML Concepts

 

Calling all those interested in improving tags and engineers’ search for machine learning/data mining research materials!

 

Please consider participating in a survey geared toward gathering the natural vocabulary used for finding ML concepts. The data will be used to create a mapping between subject tags and user’s natural language for these concepts, in the hopes of improving search and to educate researchers on different search terms for ML techniques.

 

Please consider taking and sharing the (20 min.) survey. As a thank you for participating, your e-mail (if you choose to provide one) will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card. Also, all who participate may receive a copy of the concept mappings from this research.

  1. CALL FOR PAPERS: 2021 ASEE Annual Conference in Long Beach, CA

 

The Student Division requests submissions to the 2021 ASEE Annual Conference in Long Beach, California. Abstract submissions will open on September 8th, 2021.   1. CALL FOR PAPERS: Intersectionality and Education Work during COVID-19 Transitions – Journal of Gender, Work, & Organization

 

Please find the attached call for papers for a special issue on intersectionality and education work during COVID-19 transitions. I’m co-editing with several colleagues for the journal of Gender, Work, & Organization. It is an interdisciplinary journal that welcomes critical work from diverse fields (and with a 3.101 impact factor). The deadline for an extended abstract (500 words) is November 10th, 2020, we will send out an invitation for full submission by mid-December, and the complete submission is due June 1st, 2021.

  1. CALL FOR PAPERS: Higher Education Themed Issue – Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering

 

The Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering (JWM) is pleased to announce a Themed Issue on Reimagining STEM Higher Education Research with Guest Editors Drs. Walter Lee and Sarah Rodriguez. We invite those working in this area to submit original papers that focus on social and political identities (e.g., race, gender, class, sexual orientation, disability) that are structurally linked to systems of oppression. Articles should focus on one or more aspects of the STEM higher education system (e.g., policy, structure, pedagogy, course content, ecology) and may address any combination of undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, and/or faculty in a range of higher education contexts (e.g., community colleges, minority-serving institutions, rural).

 

We will accept the following types of papers: (1) Position Papers presenting an arguable opinion, plan of action, or agenda; (2) Methods Papers interrogating methodologies, approaches, or techniques; and (3) Theory Papers interrogating frameworks, conceptual models, or paradigms. Questions to consider include: How might we better use theories to promote equity in STEM higher education? What research methods are best suited for generating the sorts of insights needed to promote equity in STEM higher education? How might we reconceptualize how we design a STEM curriculum? What lines of inquiry should be prioritized by social scientists and education researchers focused on equity in STEM higher education? If you are uncertain about the suitability of an idea, please ask one of the guest editors.

  1. SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT: Engineering Education Research Seminars at the University of Michigan

 

The University of Michigan Engineering Education Research Program is excited to be able to invite you to our 2020-2021 EER Seminar Series. Building on anti-racist momentum from the summer, we’ve decided to use our EER seminar platform to both amplify the work of Black and other minoritized scholars and to showcase research about the experiences of minoritized engineering students and/or engineers. Because of COVID uncertainty, we’ve planned for all of the seminars (through spring 2021) to take place virtually, via Zoom.

We have an incredible lineup (see below)! The seminars are all scheduled for Wednesdays, at 3:30 – 4:30pm EST, and most events are open to the interested public (though you must register to attend).   1. PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT: University of Michigan Ph.D. and M.S. Programs Engineering Education Research PROSPECTIVE STUDENT OPEN HOUSE

 

We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM’s graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM’s EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model: several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments, while EER graduate students are part of a college-wide program. This allows the EER faculty and their research to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. An EER graduate degree will provide students with career opportunities in academia, nonprofit organizations, and industry. We will be hosting a Virtual EER Prospective Student Open House on Thursday and Friday, 10/08/20 and 10/09/20 via Zoom (zoom link will be e-mailed prior to the meeting).   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Visiting Assistant Professor in Introduction to Engineering and Design at New York University Tandon School of Engineering

EG 1003 is a multidisciplinary first-year engineering course that is required for all engineering majors at NYU Tandon.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Post-Doctoral Fellow Position at New Jersey Institute of Technology

 

We are seeking a post-doctoral fellow for a NSF‐funded collaborative research project examining STEM faculty’s participation in entrepreneurship programs, particularly with an emphasis on women and the intersectionality of gender and race. The project team includes Prateek Shekhar (New Jersey Institute of Technology), Aileen Huang-Saad (University of Michigan), and Joi Mondisa (University of Michigan).

The primary responsibilities of the post-doctoral fellow include: contribute to development of interview protocol; conduct semi-structured interviews; analyze qualitative data; mentor graduate and undergraduate students; participate in collaborative project meetings of the team members; present research at conferences; and draft manuscripts for peer‐reviewed publication.

 

Required:

Ph.D. from an accredited institution in engineering education, higher education, STEM education or other related fields. A demonstrated ability to work/collaborate with others and work independently.

 

Desired:

Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following: conducting discipline-based education or higher education research using qualitative research methods; analyzing qualitative data; strong oral and written communication skills.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Post-Doctoral Position at Boise State University

 

The Educational Technology Department at Boise State University is seeking a motivated individual to fill in a full-time 12-month Post-doctoral Researcher position. The candidate will work on an NSF-funded project on integrating computational thinking (CT) in K-12 STEM learning. The candidate will work on the STEM+C research project under the supervision of Dr. Dazhi Yang. The project investigates how to integrate CT in K-12 STEM learning guided by project-based learning involving both in-and pre-service teachers working with small groups of students in an after-school program and in formal classrooms. The project has been partnering with the Boise School District and six community centers.
