4. CALL FOR SUBMISSION: FIE 2024 – Call for Abstracts for Papers/Special Session/Workshops/Panels

The 2024 Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference will be in Washington DC this year at the Washington Hilton from October 13 to 16, 2024. This prominent international event is dedicated to advancing educational innovations and research in engineering and computing education, leading the world to the development of new research insights and educational approaches. The theme for the conference is “Embracing the challenges and transforming engineering and computing education in a technology-enhanced world.” FIE 2024 continues its long tradition of disseminating groundbreaking results in engineering and computing education and offers an ideal forum to share ideas, stay informed about the latest developments, and interact with colleagues across various disciplines. We extend a warm invitation to all our colleagues to join us in Washington DC from October 13 to 16, 2024, showcasing their research and fostering meaningful connections.

This year’s co-hosts include: the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa Polytechnic Institute, the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering.

5. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: FIE 2024 – Reviewers

The 2024 Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference will be in Washington DC this year at the Washington Hilton from October 13 to 16, 2024. The Technical Program Chairs invite you to serve as a reviewer for the conference. Reviewers play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and integrity of our conference proceedings. Your expertise, time, and dedication are essential in maintaining the high standards of FIE and our academic community.

By volunteering to be an FIE Reviewer, you:

  • Contribute to the advancement of scientific research;
  • Have access to the latest scientific research in your area long before it is published;

6. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Join the ERM Best Diversity Paper Committee

Each year ERM recognizes a paper making significant contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion. To continue with this tradition, the ERM Best Diversity Paper Committee is seeking volunteers to assist with reviewing papers for the award. Committee members will review a set of papers using an established rubric and engage in a group discussion to determine a winner. The review process will take place between late-March and April. If you are interested in joining the committee or if you have any questions regarding the duties and responsibilities associated with this role, please reach out to the Chair, Dina Verdin at dina.verdin@asu.edu

7. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS:  ERM Best Paper Committee

The ERM Best Paper Committee is looking for volunteers to help review papers for the Best Paper award. This process takes place after regular reviews are submitted, typically in the March to April time frame. Committee members are asked to review several papers using a rubric and then discuss as a group to identify finalist papers, which are reviewed by the whole committee to determine the winner. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to join the Best Paper Committee for this year, please email Kirsten Davis (kad@purdue.edu).

8. CALL FOR PAPER: Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES) 2025

We are excited to invite submissions for the Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES) 2025 focused on “Servingness as Bridging Research and Practice in Engineering Education.” REES 2025 will be hosted by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), TX, USA January 13 to 16, 2025.

Position Announcements

1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Chemical Engineering Active Learning Initiative Postdoctoral Scholar in Engineering Education at Cornell University

The Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our Active Learning Initiative (ALI) team as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Engineering Education. This position is part of an exciting project aimed at deconstructing the existing Unit Operations Laboratory course and developing new inquiry-based learning modules to be embedded across the curriculum to achieve our vision of making the School a “living laboratory.” The postdoctoral scholar will work directly with Professor Allison Godwin, a tenured engineering education faculty member in CBE. The impacts of this change will be studied using both qualitative and quantitative tools to understand how active and open-ended problem-solving throughout the curriculum affects student learning, identities as engineers, motivation, and career pathways.

Responsibilities include:

  •  Develop innovative inquiry-based modules using existing and new equipment. These modules will involve developing an open-ended problem, scaffolded learning and feedback, and assessment.
  • Coordinate implementation efforts with a team of chemical engineering faculty excited to transform the curriculum.
  • Collect and analyze data on the impact of these changes using various research methods, such as surveys, interviews, and observations.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research reports and scholarly publications.
  • Present research findings at conferences and seminars.
  • Assist in the supervision and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students involved in the project.

Requirements:

  • A B.S. in Chemical Engineering
  • Ph.D. in Engineering Education, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods.
  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a research team.

 3. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Director for Instructional Support, Virginia Tech

The College of Science at Virginia Tech (https://www.science.vt.edu) invites applications for the position of Assistant Director for Instructional Support. The main purpose of this position is to lead and support efforts in the College of Sciences to advance the use of research-based instructional strategies to innovate and improve instruction, and develop communities of practice around undergraduate math and science education. This is a 12-month, full-time, Administrative and Professional (AP) Faculty position, based in Blacksburg, VA.

5. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Five Assistant Professor positions in Sustainable Systems Engineering, University of Calgary

The University of Calgary (Canada) is hiring FIVE tenure-track Assistant Professors in Sustainable Systems Engineering.
Sustainable Systems Engineering is a technical, life-centered, transdisciplinary field focusing on how to design, integrate, and manage complex systems over their life cycles with the goal of environmental, economic, and social sustainability.
We are really excited about our new SUSE program. 6. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Three Postdoctoral Fellowships in STEM Education – Florida International University

Florida International University (FIU) is recruiting a cohort of three postdoctoral fellows to conduct research alongside experts at the STEM Transformation Institute in Miami, Florida. The successful candidates will form a cohort of three postdoctoral fellows who will engage in innovative research in STEM education, emphasizing collaboration and interdisciplinarity. Fellows will receive holistic support to conduct research and develop professionally towards their individual career goals. Fellows will participate in cohort activities including 1) building their research portfolio by conducting independent original research and collaborating with existing nationally prominent projects, 2) engaging in a collaborative inquiry project to understand postdoctoral support systems across disciplines, 3) participating in individualized professional development support, and 4)receiving multidisciplinary mentoring from an intentionally chosen constellation of mentors. STEM Education research experience is not a requirement for application and the project is particularly interested in applicants who intend to work at an MSI in the future.

Postdoctoral research associates will receive a salary of $70,000 each year in addition to a competitive benefits package. This is a 12-month full-time, in-person position lasting two years. Additional benefits include up to $6,000 in support for travel to conferences, access to hiring undergraduate research assistants, and funds for publication costs. The target start date is August 1, 2024 but there is some flexibility. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals or permanent residents (DACA recipients do not qualify), have earned a STEM or related degree no more than 24 months before the start of the appointment, and must not hold a tenure-track position.

8. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Visiting Assistant Professor (2) of Mechanical Engineering, Lafayette College

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, (https://me.lafayette.edu), invites applications for two visiting assistant professor positions beginning in August 2024.  Lafayette is an undergraduate-only institution, and the Mechanical Engineering Department features small class sizes, hands-on laboratory experiences in each year of the curriculum, and five to six student-selected year-long capstone design projects annually. The Department seeks dynamic, inclusive teachers, who are interested in offering hands-on courses. The positions are each one-year, full-time appointments, with the equivalent of a three-course teaching load per semester. Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or related field by the start of the appointment.
