Invitation to Participate in Engineering Misinformation Survey

https://missouri.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2nP3DsEhP0X8y10

We are Drs. Rachelle Pedersen (Assistant Professor Texas Tech University) and Sarah Poor (Postdoctoral Scholar University of Missouri) and are writing this email to recruit participants for an anonymous online study we are conducting that you and your colleagues may be interested in. The purpose of this project is to examine what kinds of misinformation (especially STEM misinformation) that engineers face regarding their work and how that misinformation impacts their work. We would greatly appreciate it if you could share this amongst those in your department/college/organization. Here is more survey information:

If you’re interested, you will take one anonymous survey (approximately 10-15 minutes in length; linked below). If you need to pause, you can close out of the survey and return to it within one week.

Eligibility & Confidentiality: You must be at least 18 years of age or older to participate and be currently working as an engineer (regardless of discipline). Those who have worked as an engineer in the last 10 years and/or as an engineering educator are also encouraged to participate!

Your survey responses are completely confidential and will never be linked back to you. We will not ask for your name unless you choose to participate in a follow-up interview. In that case, we will ask for your name and email for contact purposes. Your name and email, if you choose to provide it, will be linked to your survey responses so that we can use them for interview purposes. No identifiable information will be included in any publications from this investigation. Also, there are no right or wrong answers to any of the questions in the survey. We are simply interested in your experiences and opinions, so the best way for you to help us with this study is to answer openly and honestly.

Follow this link to the Survey:

If you know other engineers who may be interested in completing this survey, please feel free to forward this email to them!

Please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions at all about the study. Thank you and have a great day.

The 2025 PEER Collaborative Dinner and Unconference

Unconference Dates: June 25-26, 2025

https://sites.google.com/view/peer-collaborative

Are you a faculty (new hire, pre-tenure, or mid-career tenured faculty), postdoc, or staff member who is primarily evaluated on your engineering education work? The PEER Collaborative is a growing community of people in similar situations who holistically mentor and support each other in their engineering education research positions as supportive colleagues and friends.

Each year, academic members who are primarily evaluated on engineering education research have been meeting to talk through our needs together in our emerging research-based discipline of engineering education. An annual workshop and unconference hosted immediately after ASEE has helped us to meet our own needs through peer and near-peer mentoring. The goals of the workshop are to:

Develop, support, and augment personally and professionally supportive networks and working relationships.

Support and be supported by peers near your same career level on different aspects of work and personal life.

Tentative PEER 2025 Schedule:

Wed., June 25, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm: Dinner (at nearby restaurants)

Thurs., June 26, 9:00 am-5:00 pm: Unconference (with lunch break, location TBD, near the Montreal Convention Centre)

PEER is unfunded and self-organized – an effort for us to build community and collaboratively work to meet our own needs. We hope that you will join us for PEER 2025!

NETI teaching workshops

San Diego, January 3-8, 2025

www.neti-workshop.org

NETI-1, Course Design and Student Engagement, will be offered January 6-8, 2025, at the University of San Diego. Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince will lead the long-standing foundational NETI-1 workshop, which has been offered since 1991. Previous NETI programs have reached over 3000 participants from more than 365 different schools. Our past participant evaluations have been overwhelmingly positive. The workshop features material for relatively new faculty members and other material designed to equip experienced faculty members to become teaching leaders and mentors on their campuses. Participants will include up to 60 faculty members from all branches of engineering, engineering technology, and other STEM areas. The registration fee is $1275 per participant, which covers organization and presentation costs, electronic participant notebooks, lunches, and breaks. Participants also receive a copy of Felder & Brent’s Teaching and Learning STEM: A Practical Guide and the option of touring the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering. There is a discount for bringing larger teams from the same institution. Travel expenses, including breakfasts and dinners, are not included. Further details about the workshop program and a link to register can be found at https://www.neti-workshop.org/.

NETI-2, Student Teams & Advanced Student Engagement will be offered January 3-4, 2025 at the University of San Diego. Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince will lead this advanced companion workshop to NETI-1. NETI-2 is designed for engineering and other STEM instructors who are already familiar with the topics of NETI-1 and are looking for more advanced active learning strategies to engage students at a higher level. The first half of the workshop focuses on cooperative learning and teamwork including how to form, manage, and assess student teams. The second half of the workshop prepares faculty to adopt inquiry-based instruction and problem-based learning. Participants are introduced to a range of inquiry-based teaching methods and given the time and support needed to tailor this approach to their own classes. The registration fee is $1100 per participant, which covers organization and presentation costs, electronic participant notebooks, lunches, and breaks. There is a discount for bringing larger teams from the same institution. Travel expenses, including breakfasts and dinners, are not included. Further details about the workshop program and a link to register can be found at www.neti-workshop.org.
