U221·Workshop: Engineering Collection Development: Tools and Tips from Collective Wisdom

This workshop will focus on collection development strategies and practice for the engineering librarian. It is designed to build knowledge and self-confidence for attendees new to the profession and for experienced librarians facing new challenges in collection development. The presenters will provide tools and guidelines for effective work based on their collective years of knowledge and experience from a variety of institutions. Participants will work together in teams to solve an engineering collection case built from real life challenges. Challenges may include budget reductions, new engineering programs to support, or new library initiatives paid from the collection budget. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the documentation that accompanies collection development, including collection policies, usage statistics, approval plans, and patron-driven and evidence-based acquisitions plans. They will also gain an understanding of the changing landscape of engineering literature and the methods for acquiring it.

M521· Articulating the Value of Our Daily Work: An Initial Discussion of the Assessment Challenges of Engineering Librarians

Engineering librarians need to assess the effectiveness of our library instruction and outreach for many reasons, including communicating library value to institutional stakeholders and making impactful contributions to the scholarly literature. However, as practitioners, most librarians have not been formally educated in research design, data collection, and data analysis. To increase our skills and knowledge and to better align with various publication expectations and guidelines (e.g., ELD Author Guidelines), this panel will lead a discussion on library assessment needs with regard to research design, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination and discovery. The goal of the panel is to facilitate a conversation regarding librarian assessment challenges and needs to design a future ASEE workshop.
Each panelist will give a brief introduction to the topic outlining common tools/methods/best practices followed by a short question period. After all three panelists present and have questions, there will be time for open questions and dialogue. The remaining time will allow session attendees to break into groups for more focused discussion/questions around particular research methods, analysis techniques, or dissemination channels.
