Michigan State University College of Engineering Undergraduate Studies department is seeking four highly-motivated, student-centered Academic Advisor-Specialists. The position will serve as an academic advisor to all levels of engineering students in all engineering majors.
This is a fixed-term, twelve-month, academic specialist position with a 100% appointment in the College of Engineering beginning early summer and is renewable contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance. This position is designated as remote-friendly, which means some of the duties may be performed remotely as mutually agreed upon between the supervisor and the successful candidate. The exact schedule will be determined by the supervisor and the successful candidate.
Duties of this position will include, but are not limited to:
- Perform the full range of academic advising activities including summer academic orientation course, course and career planning, and major selection.
- Responsibility for other student service functions and student engagement activities such as Preview Day with Future Engineers, College Colloquium, and Academic Scholars Program.
- Work in a collaborative setting with department faculty, other advisors and student support staff throughout the university.
- Occasional evening or weekend work can be expected.
Minimum Requirements
- Master’s degree
- Excellent communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills are required.
- Ability to establish rapport across ethnic, racial, cultural, and gender differences is a must.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite is expected.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, or related field and experience working with and/or advising college-age students is preferred.
- Interest in work with student transitions is desirable.
- Familiarity with university policies, procedures and student data systems; knowledge of career fields associated with science and engineering topics is preferred.
