1996 ELD/ASEE Annual Conference

  • Washington, D.C., June 23-26, 1996

  • Conference Program

The ASEE Annual Conference, scheduled for June 23-26, 1996 in Washington DC, is a vital, inspirational mix of formal technical sessions, organized social activities, informal get-togethers, and otherwise discussing, finding, and sharing solutions to common problems facing engineering librarians. Shared interests and individual perspectives are the catalysts for new members and long-time members to discuss, learn, and have fun together.

No other professional group has such a distinct focus on engineering librarianship. On top of that, you won’t find a more congenial group of colleagues anywhere!! You will feel welcome even if this is your first ASEE conference as an ELD member.

Creating Your Own Web Home Page (Session 0441)
Sunday, June 23 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Presenters: Jill Powell and Bill Jenkins, Cornell
Jill and Bill have an in-library course they are adapting for this purpose. An outline may be found on their library home page. This fee-based ($20.00) workshop is intended for engineering faculty members, rather than ELD members. This fee-based workshop (US$20) is intended for engineering faculty members; ELD members are also welcome. Note: This session, #0441, does not appear as a “ticketed event” on the advance conference program. Enrollment is limited to 35; registration is required.

ASEE Society-Wide Picnic (Session 0605)
Sunday, June 23
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Cost: $12.00
Your first official opportunity to network with fellow engineering librarians, representing libraries large and small from the U. S. and Canada (and sometimes from outside North America!). For early arrivals to D. C., there are usually pre-picnic ELD outings to join as well.

Monday, June 24
8:30 am – 10:15 am
Moderator: Kate Thomes, U. of Pittsburg
Attendees introduce themselves and briefly describe local events and major decisions in a round-robin format. Information tidbits from this first “technical” session can be another valuable starting point for one-to-one networking throughout the conference. (If you need more information before June 1, contact Andy Stewart (astewart@umr.edu).)

Digital Libraries and What’s Next ?? (Session 2241)
Tuesday, June 25, 8:30 am – 10:15 am
Moderator: Cecilia Mullen, San Jose State University
Will your campus finally reach that goal of organized access to digital data only to find that one more medium is becoming standardized? If your campus didn’t digitize its informational resources, should you just wait until the dust settles? Experts share their thoughts on how to plan for the library of 2010.
Speakers:

  • John J. Leggett — Director, Center for the Study of Digital Libraries, Texas A&M University
  • William Y. Arms — Director, Library Systems, Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI)

Patent Information In A Changing World (Session 2341)
Tuesday, June 25
10:30 am – 12:00 noon
Moderator: Christina Byrne, U. of Washington
What’s up with GATT? What will happen if the US Patent and Trademark Office becomes a government corporation? How do recent changes to the patent laws affect patent practice as well as the interests of engineers and inventors? How will increasing demands for access to patent data and expanding electronic resources impact the dissemination and use of patent information? This is just a sampling of the questions to be explored.

  • Patent Information Dissemination and the Patent & Trademark Depository Library Program
Presenter: Martha Crockett Sneed, Manager, Patent & Trademark Depository Library Program, United States Patent and Trademark Office
  • Patents and the Engineering Curriculum
Presenter: Michael White, Engineering Librarian, Raymond H. Fogler Library, University of Maine
  • What’s New in Patents? Changes to the U.S. Patent Laws

“How Will Electronic Publishing Affect Me??” (Session 3341)
ASEE Mini-Plenary Session
Wednesday, June 26, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon
Moderator: John Saylor, Director, Engineering Library, Cornell University
Panelists will address different aspects of the dramatic changes e-publishing will bring to the traditional triangle of publishers, libraries, and faculty members/other library users.
The motivation for this session is to “reach out” to the typical engineering faculty member, who may have only a rudimentary awareness of the widespread impact electronic publishing will have on academe.
Speakers:

  • Jay Lucker, Adjunct Professor, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College and Director Emeritus, MIT Libraries — “Tenure, Research, and Publishing in an Electronic Environment”
  • Terry Noreault, Director, Office of Research, OCLC — “New Paradigms in Publishing: The Electronic Revolution”
  • David Martin, Professor of Materials Science, Iowa State U., “Electronic Publishing as Viewed by the Individual Faculty Member”
David Martin chairs Iowa State University’s Committee on Intellectual Property Rights and chaired the task force with drafted ISU’s current Strategic Plan for Information Technology. He was the principal architect of two virtual library/electronic publishing systems:

His Information Technology research centers on standards-based systems for information description, discovery, and retrieval; his physical science research centers on simulating materials behavior and acoustics for monitoring high-level nuclear wastes.

Note: This is the first ELD-sponsored mini-plenary session in several years, so please promote it to faculty from YOUR institution who will be attending ASEE in 1996.
