ELD Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

Adopted June 9, 2023

Diversity – ELD believes that diversity in groups, values, and perspectives facilitates critical understanding of the complex ethical and social issues surrounding education and practice in engineering and librarianship. We embrace diversity by advocating for equity and inclusivity. Diversity encompasses visible and non-visible differences, including but not limited to: ability, age, belief system, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, race, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Equity – ELD recognizes that instances of discrimination and harassment are both specific and representative of systemic issues impacting the library profession and the wider world. We promote equity by working actively to challenge and respond to bias, harassment, and discrimination in all areas of librarianship, including but not limited to, membership, leadership, professional development and recognition, publishing, teaching, peer-review, and scholarship.

Inclusion – ELD believes that innovation and development of enduring solutions to global problems happens when we learn from experiences, beliefs, and perspectives that differ from our own. Therefore, no individual should experience discrimination, marginalization, or exclusion due to conscious or unconscious biases. We foster inclusion by being intentional in creating an environment where differences are welcomed, different perspectives are shared and heard respectfully, and where every individual feels a sense of belonging.
