The program for the 1997 ASEE Conference is almost finalized. I am pleased with the program and feel that the moderators and speakers for sessions sponsored by the Engineering Libraries Division will reach the goal of this year’s conference theme– “Engineering Education and the Information Revolution.”
This notice contains most of the information that is needed to plan for the conference. A similar summary of this message will be published in the ELD Newsletter. In the next few weeks, a few short notices will be published on ELDNET-L to update today’s message.
The conference is June 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Members should receive a conference announcement with your recent ASEE Prism. Newcomers can learn more about the conference at ASEE web web site: http://www.asee.org/about/events/conferences/index.cfm
Glee Willis from the ELD’s membership committee will arrange roommates for the conference. Please contact her at: willis@unr.edu
Registration
Please register before April 1 so that you can take advantage of the $50 early registration discount. Please read your registration information carefully. ASEE must have your money before April 1. Costs for workshops and special events must also be paid. Session numbers used for registration are listed with the schedule of events. Please register for the Society Picnic, Distance Learning Luncheon, and Annual ELD Dinner.
Members who are attending the conference for the first time are eligible for a “first-timer coupon.” This will save you $25 in registration fees, but only if you register by JUNE 1ST since it won’t be accepted during on-site registration. If you are taking advantage of the first-timer coupon, you need to send in your registration by snailmail since there is no way to use the coupon via the web registration form. To obtain the coupon, please contact Glee Willis: willis@unr.edu who will fax you the coupon to use.
Program Information
Moderators have been working on their sessions since last September. Speakers have been chosen and are working diligently on their presentations. I thank everyone for their hard work and perseverance.
Please consider adding your efforts to our poster session. We welcome more poster presenters. This is a wonderful opportunity for new and old ASEE members to introduce projects and programs. Andy Shimp of Yale University is moderator this of session. His e-mail address is: andy.shimp@yale.edu
Conference Highlights
Sunday’s Society-Wide Picnic is the kick-off event for the conference. The Engineering Libraries Division is well-represented at this event so look for the traditional organizers, Glee Willis and the membership committee. They do an excellent job of using maroon and gold balloons to identify our division’s tables at the picnic.
On Monday, we will have a new event this year. It is a luncheon combined with a technical session on Distance Learning. Cost is $5. Corporate donations will pay for the rest of the expenses. Please register to attend this session.
Mel DeSart is organizing a trip to the baseball game on Monday evening. Announcements have been sent via ELDNET-L. Contact Mel at desart@ukans.edu.
We look forward to our banquet at Karl Ratzsch’s Old World Restaurant on Tuesday night. Cost is $40. We have heard great reviews of the food!
Travel Arrangements
Most people will be flying via commercial airlines to the conference. If you are driving to Milwaukee and are interested in visiting engineering libraries along the way, I am including a list of contact people and e-mail addresses for libraries in the region.

After the conference, ASEE and conference organizers are recommending vacations at Lake Geneva. I also recommend an area which is about 150 miles north of Milwaukee called Door County. I have enjoyed short treks there. This is 50 miles from Green Bay which also gives you an opportunity to visit the home of the Packers. Another area that families might enjoy is Wisconsin Dells.
Restaurants
The program chair is investigating restaurant reviews, but has no definitive recommendations at this time. There is a web site of restaurants with menus available. As soon as information is available, it will be forwarded to the listserv.
