2. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER, TUFTS UNIVERSITY (Department of Mechanical Engineering & Center for Engineering Education and Outreach)
Kristen Wendell and Ethan Danahy, and the Tufts University Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO), in collaboration with Gilly Puttick and Debra Bernstein at TERC, seek a postdoctoral researcher to join their research team on a new project beginning in the fall semester of 2017. The project, Designing Biomimetic Robots, will explore middle-school student learning in the context of interdisciplinary biomimicry and engineering design curricula. The postdoctoral researcher will work with the Hummingbird robotics kit to adapt it for use in biomimicry engineering design challenges, contribute to curriculum development and revision, and conduct research on students’ computational thinking, scientific reasoning, and engineering design practices. Job activities will also include participating in professional development sessions and helping middle school teachers enact the curriculum with a responsive, student-centered approach.
Additionally, this position may include teaching responsibilities (the equivalent of two course per year – 1 Fall and 1 Summer) for graduate courses in the CEEO’s Teacher Engineering Education Program (teep.tufts.edu).
Postdoctoral researcher appointments are made on a one-year basis and annual reappointment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and the continued availability of funding. This position could be potentially funded for up to three years. Options are available for a three-quarter-time or full-time position. This position is benefits eligible. Candidates must have a PhD or EdD in science, engineering, math or STEM education fields or equivalent, have experience working with K-12 students and teachers, and exhibit potential for conducting STEM education research independently. Knowledge of and experience implementing project-based curricula are required along with strong oral and written communication and organizational skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD/EdD in STEM education with training in a STEM discipline (or a PhD in a STEM discipline with training in STEM education). Preference will also be given to candidates with qualitative and mixed methods education research experience and demonstrated success with scholarly publications. Experience with K-12 robotics experience desired but not required.

3. POST DOCTORAL TEACHING FELLOWSHIP IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION – INTERNATIONAL TEACHING EXPERIENCE, DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
We are seeking two post doctoral teaching fellows for a new collaboration between the University of Michigan (U-M) Department of Biomedical Engineering and Shantou University (Shantou, Guangdong Province, China). This “train the trainer” engineering education collaboration will lead to the development of the next generation, experiential biomedical engineering curriculum to meet 21st century challenges.
The primary responsibilities include learning how to develop and teach experiential undergraduate courses through active participation in U-M Center for Research in Learning and Teaching (CRLT) programming and the U-M BME Instructional Incubator. Fellows will be mentored by U-M instructors on the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor campus and then travel to Shantou University, where they will lead the development and launch of similar courses for the new Shantou University Biomedical Engineering Program. The goal of this collaboration is to introduce innovative, evidence based pedagogical practices into the Shantou classroom.
The fellows will be responsible for contributing to the development of course materials and developing assessment materials, holding office hours, grading, managing and class projects. Teaching will be in English. The fellows will also contribute to designing education research studies that evaluate the evolution of the introduction of experiential instruction in the Shantou curriculum, collecting data, data analysis and drafting manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. Fellows will participate in collaborative meetings between instructors at U-M and Shantou University.
The project leadership includes U-M Professors Aileen Huang-Saad and Jan Stegemann. The fellows will be located at University of Michigan and Shantou University, shadowing U-M instructors in the classroom and launching U-M based curriculum at Shantou University. Successful fellows will have an opportunity to transition into a tenure track position at Shantou University.
Required: PhD degree in engineering from an accredited institution, related to biomedical engineering, or equivalent college teaching experience of biomedical engineering. A demonstrated ability to work/collaborate with others and work independently and desire to teach in hiring education.

Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit some type of media that demonstrates their teaching (e.g. link to video of the applicant teaching or an example of an instructional intervention designed by the applicant).
