ASEE 2002 Annual Conference Montreal – Engineering Libraries Division

 

Below is a conference preview of ELD sessions, workshops, receptions, meetings, dinners and other activities.  Monday, April 15th is the last day for the early bird registration rate.  You can register online at http://www.asee.org/.  If you want to make changes or corrections to your registration, or have questions, call the ExpoExchange hotline at (301) 694-5243.

 

Note that you must register in advance for the ELD Annual Banquet (for new members, this is a must-attend event!), the Society-Wide Picnic Sunday night (another tradition), and the EndNote workshop on Sunday.  Session numbers are listed below to the left of each session title.  You must put the session number on the registration form for events that require registration or have a charge associated with them.

For those in town Saturday, look for an announcement from the CUEBALLS who will identify a meeting place & time to join others for a relaxed dinner, pub crawl, or similarly low-key activity.

0441 Creating Bibliographies with EndNote

Need help organizing your references and creating bibliographies? The EndNote software program allows you to store and manage references and import citations from online databases. Use EndNote to insert references into word processing documents and compile a bibliography in the citation style of your choice. In this session, you will learn the basics of EndNote and advanced features for creating customized import filters and citation styles.

For those not attending the EndNote workshop, or other ASEE session or tour, the CUEBALLS will be asking for input and volunteers to help organize an activity or two during the afternoon.  See the coming CUEBALLS note for more detail.

This opening session and ice-breaker gives attendees an opportunity to meet fellow Division members and to identify and discuss the major issues affecting academic engineering libraries and librarians.  A perennially popular session, many feel the format has become unwieldy in recent years as Division attendance has increased.  Look for changes in the traditional format of this session this year!

This session will discuss the role of emerging information technologies on the virtual digital library. Specifically addressed will be the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and linking technologies, the virtual journal, metadata and markup standards, publisher full-text repositories, and simultaneous search and local reference resolvers.

New technologies provide the means for disseminating scientific information outside of the traditional journal publication system. This session examines the historical roots and functions of scholarly communication and looks at some examples of new publication models. The session will also invite discussion on the impact of thesechanges on the field of engineering.

Borrowing a phrase from aerospace engineering, engineering librarians teach (guide) students in locating relevant and authoritative information with skills to navigate technical databases so they remain in control of the research process and look beyond Google. The National Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology Education Digital Library (NSDL) is under construction with funding from NSF. The NSDL will offer, via the Internet, high-quality materials for science, mathematics, engineering and technology education. Scheduled for release Fall 2002, it is likely the largest, most heterogeneous digital library yet built.
